Impressions of Lawrenceville’s
Historic House Tour

Celebrating Pittsburgh's 250th Anniversary

The two-day Lawrenceville Historic House Tour was a history-filled extravaganza. Featuring historic reenactors and musicians, the 2008 tour billed as “Snapshots in Time” showcased 21 homes as well as special sites. This year, I'm proud to say, the tour included the home I share with Martha Ressler, which is a modest row house built in 1904, as rental housing for workers in the still infant steel industry at the foot of the hill and close to the river.

A variety of historical reenactments and living history characterizations from Lawrenceville’s diverse neighborhood were presented. Reenactments and performances included participation by the 9th Pennsylvania Civil War reenactment group, a young George Washington, Stephen Foster, a wake for a young girl killed in the explosion at the Arsenal, Fritzie Zivic (a professional boxer who fought during the 1940’s), and Max Leslie, the Mayor-maker—plus several re-enactors who portrayed immigrant laborers in the industrialization era and victims of the 1936 flood.
