For many decades of the Twentieth Century the Heppenstall Steel Works was a principal employer and a center of economic life in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville section. It was one of the strongholds of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and of the proud union traditions of Pittsburgh working people. In 1979 the mill was shuttered and the dreams of a generation of steelworkers were dashed, see Martha Ressler's painting, "Steal Dreams," at MarthaResler.com for further commentary. Finally, in early 2007 the several-years-long process of dismantling the mill began, and is documented here. |
