Don Leuchtag directing rail traffic |
Don Leuchtag's model railroad must be seen to be believed. Occupying most of the large basement in Don and Barb's Medina, Ohio, home, this artfully done set-up is built on three levels (one underground for storage and switching). In its April-May 2008 issue, O Gauge Railroading magazine featured Don's creation under the title "Don Leuchtag Celebrates Life in Akron." An extensive phootospread accompanies the article. Among the features of Don's model railroad are an actual recording from the Akron, OH, station; a John Wayne movie in the drive-in; pioneering LED lighting for signage on the set. For the model railroading enthusiasts who have navigated here, I would refer you to theO Gauge Magazine article for details on the fancy radio-controlled switching system and other technical details. I had the opportunity to photograph it during a family visit in April 2008. The scenes I've chosen focus less on the railroad and the action chosen by the magazine, instead capture the scenes of daily life or those of personal importance Don worked into his model. To take maximum advantage of this presentation, be sure to use the lightbox navigation tools or the automated slideshow. Details of some images are shown without corresponding linked thumbnails on this page.
